History of the Four Nations
The Six Nations Championship (reffered to as the RBS Six Nations) previously known as the Five Nations Championship, is an annual international rugby union competition involving six European sides: England, Ireland, France, Italy, Scotland and Wales. The winners of the Six Nations are seen as the European Champions. Ireland are the current Six Nations holders for the first time since 1948, having won the 2009 competition by beating all other teams, and winning the Triple Crown by beating England, Scotland and Wales.
Format of the Six Nations
The format of the Six Nations championship is simple: each team plays every other team once with home field advantage alternating from one year to the next. Two points for a win, 1 point for a draw and 0 points for a loss.
If a team wins all it's games, they are said to have won the Grand Slam. The team that finishes bottom of the table is said to have won the Wooden Spoon.
There are also several individual competitions that take place under the umbrella of the Six Nations.
- The Calcutta Cup - contested between England and Scotland since 1879
- The Millenium Trophy - contested between England and Ireland since 1988
- The Centenary Quaich - contested between Scotland and Ireland since 1989
- The Giuseppe Garibaldi Trophy - contested between France and Italy since 2007
